Malia’s Journey with Type 1 Diabetes and the Transformative Impact of SDRI
In February 2023, the Musterer family’s life changed when their then 12-year-old daughter Malia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
In February 2023, the Musterer family’s life changed when their then 12-year-old daughter Malia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Despite the initial shock, the family was determined to find the best care possible to help Malia through this crisis. They soon learned about SDRI, where Malia became a patient of Francine Kaufman, MD, and Nurse Practitioner Mei Mei Church, FNP-BC, CDCES.
Dr. Kaufman and Mei Mei helped Malia transition to an automated insulin delivery system (artificial pancreas). This proved to be a significant milestone for Malia offering her newfound freedom and flexibility in managing her diabetes as this system automates insulin delivery allowing Malia and her family to think less about diabetes and spend more time enjoying life.
SDRI’s outreach programs have also played a significant role in the Musterer’s life with diabetes. Malia’s mother, Kirstin, has become a regular participant at our monthly OneTalk program. The knowledge of the expert facilitators and guests has been a remarkable resource for Kirstin and a reminder that T1D is a team event.
“Diabetes is a burden too heavy for one person to bear alone,” said Kirstin. “I’m determined for my family to stand by Malia’s side and rally around her.”
SDRI is proud to partner with Malia throughout her journey with T1D. She has embraced her new life with grace and determination, proving that diabetes is just one part of her story, not the entirety of it.
