Proud Leaders in Health Equity

Our Commitment

For over a century, SDRI has remained deeply committed to advancing health equity while addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes.

SDRI has expanded research and programming for health inequities in the Latino population disproportionately burdened by obesity and type 2 diabetes. For over 20 years, SDRI has advanced educational and research opportunities for underserved communities. Locally, nearly 50 percent of our community consists of the Latino population who are disproportionally burdened by diabetes. As a global leader in diabetes research, SDRI plays a critical role in partnering with local and national health organizations to address access to healthcare for underserved Latinos who are at risk for developing any form of diabetes.

We offer several free educational programs to this community to help them better manage any form of diabetes they live with. SDRI also treats patients at the county clinic on a weekly basis to help the most at risk patients better manage gestational diabetes. Additionally, SDRI has 4 full time bilingual Community Health Workers (CHWs) who play an integral role in recruitment efforts for research studies conducted at SDRI for the Latino population.

In 2024, SDRI has made several strides in implementing and evaluating the efficacy of a plant-forward nutrition-based lifestyle intervention program, delivered by bilingual community health workers (CHWs), to improve maternal and fetal outcomes in underserved, pregnant Latina women with diabetes.
Providing care for underserved Latina women at both SDRI and the Santa Barbara County Health Department. Our diabetes in pregnancy programs provide essential care and support to expectant mothers to ensure healthy outcomes for both mother and baby.
Launching a groundbreaking new research initiative to develop a culturally appropriate diet intervention program that’s tailored to the needs and preferences of the local Latino community.

Education classes for the Latino population:

Promoting health equity by bridging gaps in healthcare access and education through our Community Health Workers. These dedicated individuals are trained at SDRI to become specialists in diabetes and research programs, working closely with community members to provide culturally competent care, support self-management practices, and empower individuals to take control of their health and diabetes.
