Why we are celebrating:
Dr. Sansum’s extraordinary accomplishment ensured that diabetes was no longer a death sentence and forever changed the way this disease is managed. With your support, SDRI will further our mission of providing research, education, and care to those impacted by diabetes–both locally and globally.

This photo was taken in 1920 of Dr. Sansum, the same year he moved to Santa Barbara to take over the Potter Metabolic Clinic.

Dr. Sansum's first insulin patients gathered in Santa Barbara in 1924. Dr. Sansum is labeled as #1, and Charles Cowan is #2.

Dr. Sansum manufactured his own insulin in his lab in Santa Barbara. Once Dr. Sansum selected Charles Cowan, his most terminal case at the time, he said, "If insulin can prolong this man's life, it can save anybody." (Continuing Quest, page 70)

Dr. Sansum always had his door open to patients and staff. After his milestone injection on May 31, 1922 of insulin to Charles Cowan, he saved thousands of lives in California.
