Sansum Diabetes Research Institute hosted a Diabetes Academy entitled “Intensified Insulin Delivery/Insulin Pump Therapy for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes,” on November 3-4, 2007. The Academy was held at 2219 Bath Street in Santa Barbara.
The program, funded in part by a grant from The Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation, was attended by physicians and healthcare providers from Santa Barbara and surrounding areas. The workshop was led by international diabetes expert Lois Jovanovic, M.D., FACE. Other faculty included Angelina Trujillo, M.D., FACE; Howard Zisser, M.D., Jenifer Gaffaney, M.S., R.D., Fima Lifshitz, M.D.; and UCSB Professors Francis J. Doyle III, Ph.D and Dale Seborg, Ph.D.
The management and education of the patient with diabetes has become increasingly complex with the advent of new insulins, pharmaceuticals, and insulin delivery systems. This hands-on one and a half-day workshop taught participants to apply and effectively adapt new strategies to treat diabetes throughout the various stages in the lives of patients with diabetes while affording physicians 13 hours of continuing medical education credits.
SDRI plans to offer an annual Diabetes Academy as part of a commitment to share their expertise with practicing physicians.
